Procedure

• The first part of the treatment is done at a dermatology clinic. After evaluation, the first cream is applied and left on for four to eight hours. You are sent home with a maintenance cream that needs to be applied two to three times a day for two weeks, then once a day for as long as you wish to continue treatment.
  
  

Cost

• As of September 2009, the average cost $600 to $800 for a treatment package. Additional maintenance cream costs approximately $175 for 1 fluid oz.
  
  

Side Effects

• The first treatment will cause redness that looks like a sunburn. It may cause itching, slight burning and a feeling of tightness in the skin.
  
  

Results

• Skin typically begins to look clearer during the first week. After two to three weeks, the skin looks healthier and shinier. The dark spots vanish within about six to eight weeks.
  
  

Considerations

• Cosmelan cannot be combined with any other skin-lightening treatment. If you stop using this product, the dark spots will likely return.
