Mood Swings in Toddlers
- Sleep is an important part of a toddler's day. If his sleep cycle is interrupted or shortened, it can cause mood changes. Often putting your toddler to bed an hour early can make a big change in his overall mood.
- Nutrition should be thought of as fuel for the body. Highly processed foods with additives can alter the emotional state of your toddler. Give your toddler a variety of whole foods and stay away from processed foods that are often more convenient.
- Changes in an environment can cause mood swings in your toddler. They may not be able to express their fear or anxiety about a parent's schedule change with words. Their attitude can show how they are feeling about these changes. Talking with your toddler before any changes take place can help ease the transition.
- Toddlers are gaining independence and will express their desires or frustrations through their mood. Stay calm with a temper tantrum and help your toddler when she is frustrated.
- Mood swings are a normal part of a toddler development; however, excess mood swings can indicate a serious problem. Consult your doctor if your toddler's mood swings are constant and feel excessive to you.
