Afraid of Your Mastiff Biting?
Let me start by saying this; All dogs will bite IF they feel threatened, frightened, hurt, and/or are instigated.
People tend to publicize dog biting more if it involves a large/giant breed dog or it is a violent attack.
That being said, you are worried about your Mastiff biting, you have reason to be.
A Mastiff has a bite force of 500 pounds per square inch.
Which could easily break some of the largest bones in your body.
As puppies they are going to bite, nip, chew, bark, and just about everything else that may annoy you...
puppies will be puppies.
This is where you need to catch them, train them right, I like to call it "Preventative Training".
You have to be the Alpha Leader, if you do not let them know this early in their life it will be harder to gain the position back later.
Be very specific with them in your commands; Make sure they know what "No" means, but be more specific than that, for example "No Bite" or "No Biting", if you have more than one dog be even more specific (so they don't get confused) "Caesar No Biting".
Also teach them the "Careful" command.
There is a difference between Biting and Grabbing, I learned this the hard way.
We were playing one day and it started to get a little rough and my hand was close to his mouth and he accidentally bit me, there were no serious injuries, but now when we play if my hand gets near his mouth he will tend to just drop the toy in fear of hurting me, or if he doesn't I will say "Careful" and he will ease up a bit.
You can still play with grabbing, it's kind of like biting, but their more careful..
...
Ahh you see how all of these things link together :) There are a few more things to help prevent Mastiff Biting; You have to have toys for them to play with, no matter what age, having toys will encourage them to stop biting/chewing on inappropriate things and to bite/chewing on the correct things.
If they start to bite/nip on you, a couch, a chair, or whatever it be, tell them "No Biting" and replace it with one of their toys.
That way they know what is acceptable and what is unacceptable.
Also, proper training and socialization is crucial with every breed, especially this one.
Giant breed dogs tend not to realize how big and strong they are, they like to think they're lap dogs.
Finally, please don't condone Mastiff biting, they are awesome companions and with the proper "Preventative Training" they will know when the time is right to bite and the time to just bark.
Mastiff's can be some of the kindest, gentlest, and most loyal dogs you have ever met with the proper training and socialization.
