Pets & Animal Dog Breeds

The Best Dog Breeds for Apartments

    Poodles

    • Poodles are good choices for apartment living. They are easily trained, and the toy variety can be taken for short walks, and receive the bulk of their exercise inside. If miniature poodles receive about an hour of outside exercise a day, they make good apartment dogs.

    Mastiffs

    • Mastiffs are large, heavy dogs, that are not active because of their weight and their size. They are calm and even tempered, especially as they age. However, mastiffs suffer from joint problems and should not be given too much stair climbing to do until they are fully mature. Similarly, older dogs may have trouble navigating flights of stairs.

    Greyhounds

    • Greyhounds are capable of great bursts of speed, but this speed is short-lived and sustained by a sedentary style. Greyhounds are good-natured, quiet dogs, and while they do need daily walks, their grooming needs are minimal.

    Pugs

    • Pugs are small, affectionate, calm and known for getting along with other pets. They are quiet, which is a good trait for apartment dwelling dogs. They need daily exercise, but their squashed faces cause breathing problems so don't exercise them too much. Pugs need their facial wrinkles cleaned every day.

    Schipperkes

    • The Schipperke is a small breed known for its lively intelligence and active nature. This breed is very sociable and requires regular exercise to keep it calm. It is good for the apartment dweller who wants an active and energetic dog and willing is to exercise the dog routinely.
