The United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that the employment outlook for jobs filled by professional editors and writers, including those filled by freelancers, is expected to grow by 8 percent through 2018. Unlike full-time communications employees, freelance writers might spend hours poring over a new novel or poetry compilation; they might work for several corporate clients. Gaps in finances needed to meet living expenses can, at times, be daunting for these creative entrepreneurs. Private and publicly funded grants help freelance writers to fill these economic gaps. - The Arizona Artist Project Grant is sponsored by the Arizona Commission on the Arts. Funding from the grant is to be used by freelance writers to create new books or projects and to continue to develop writing ideas. Freelance writers wishing to receive the grant must submit a proposal that includes a budget, type of work they plan to use the grant to create and the timeframe in which they expect to complete the work. Money received from the grant cannot be used for academic research, self-publishing or self-promotional efforts. As of 2010, individual grants are awarded for a maximum amount of $5,000. Freelance writers can only receive one grant in their lifetime. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, not taking more than three credit hours at a postsecondary school and they must also be a resident of Arizona.
- The Leeway Transformation Grant is administered in two phases. As of 2010, phase one of the grant awards a maximum grant of $15,000 to women and transformational freelance writers who have lived in the Delaware Valley for the past 2 years or longer. Written works created by the artists must engender social change and have done so for at least the last 5 years. Freelance writers should present materials that confirm their need for financial assistance when they apply for the grant. Grants are typically awarded to artists who have no other financial resources with which to complete their works that focus on social change. Phase two of the grant is by invitation only. Phase two grant award amount is $100; the award is to be used to cover expenses associated with preparing sample works. In-person meetings are also offered to award winners at no cost.
- Individual freelance writers who have been a resident of New Hampshire for at least 1 year may apply for the grant. As of 2010, two awards in the amount of $5,000 are scheduled to be awarded. The grant provides funding that helps literary artists to write, publish or record and present their works. Writers must be at least 18 years of age. Freelance writers should submit samples of previously created works, including six copies of a 30-page manuscript for works of fiction. Freelance writers who create non-fiction should submit six copies of a 30-page manuscript to the Council. Poets should submit six copies of 15-pages of poetry work. All freelance writers should include a resume with their grant application. Grants last for one year. Before the end of the grant, writers must present parts of their work at an event that is open to the New Hampshire community.
