How to Repair Rust With No Welder
- 1). Rub the rusted metal vigorously with a wire brush. Remove loose dirt, grime and rust particles from the metal surface.
- 2). Apply a thick layer of naval jelly over the rusted metal with a paintbrush. Wear rubber gloves and goggles when you apply the naval jelly. Allow the naval jelly to remain on the metal for 10 to 30 minutes.
- 3). Dampen a rag with water. Wipe the rag over the metal surface to remove the jelly residue and grime.
- 4). Wrap sandpaper around a sanding block. Rub the sanding block over the metal to remove any remaining rust.
- 5). Dampen a steel wool pad with mineral spirits. Wipe the mineral spirits thoroughly over the metal to remove anything that could prevent paint from bonding to the surface.
- 6). Apply a coat of metal epoxy to the metal with a putty knife. Place a sheet of woven fiberglass over the wet epoxy.
- 7). Cover the fiberglass sheet with another coat of epoxy. Allow the epoxy to cure according to the manufacturer's directions.
- 8). Apply a coat of alkyd primer over the entire metal surface with a paintbrush. Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer's directions.
- 9). Spray three coats of quality metal paint over the metal surface. Allow each coat of spray paint to dry according to the manufacturer's directions.
