Recombinant Human Haemoglobin

Recombinant Human Haemoglobin
The search for an adequate replacement for human red blood cells has been ongoing for over three centuries. The production of a first-generation recombinant human haemoglobin is therefore a huge milestone in blood transfusion research. Human haemoglobin somatogen (rHb1.1) is a genetically modified haemoglobin produced from Escherichia coli and has negligible infectious risk compared with allogeneic blood or haemoglobin derived from human or bovine red blood cells. Although well tolerated in early clinical trials, its use in clinical practice is likely to be limited due to its comparatively short half-life (<12 hours).

Human haemoglobin somatogen (rHb1.1) is not available in France and Spain.
