My Kenmore Dryer Is Making a Squealing Noise
- An old saying suggests the squeaky wheel gets the grease, but when your dryer’s wheels get squeaky, they are better off being replaced entirely. The rolling drum that holds your laundry spins to help dry the garments. Some models of Kenmore dryers use a set of rollers or wheels to support the drum and help it smoothly roll along throughout the drying process. When the wheels get worn, they can begin to squeal as they turn on the axles. To stop this noise, you need to replace the wheels. For even wear, you should replace all the support rollers at once instead of opting to replace only the noisy one; odds are the others will become noisy soon.
- Some Kenmore dryers started using slide-type idler pulleys, or tension pulleys, in recent years to keep tension on the belt that drives the spinning drum, but they tend to have a noise problem. Some of these pulleys will squeal when doing their job and should be replaced. Replacing them with a roller-type idler pulley will cure the problem. Most new Kenmore units are shipped with the roller-style assembly.
- Your Kenmore dryer may not have rollers to support the drum. Some models actually use a center spindle in the rear of the drum instead. The bearings used in the ball-and-socket or shaft-type spindle can become worn in time and will begin to squeal as the drum turns. When this happens, you will have to replace the bearings and potentially the rest of the components of the drum spindle to stop it.
- A blower wheel is a part of the dryer that pulls the hot air over the laundry load, over the thermostat and then pushes it out through the exhaust vents. It can cause squealing, humming or other unusual sounds not consistent with normal operation sometimes if it gets clogged with lint. It is a plastic device that can wear out over time or have trouble working normally if too much lint is present. Cleaning the blower wheel will often stop the noise. If it doesn’t, you should replace the entire component.
