Keeping a battery-powered radio with your emergency kit allows you to stay informed on the latest developments of the storm by listening to the local weather station. This item can be a lifesaver and gives you the power to know where the tornado is, new developments and if there's more to come. Power outages are a common occurrence during a tornado, keeping a flashlight on hand can eliminate some of the panic during these times. Don't forget extra batteries for both of these items. - Keep a written list of instructions of how and where to turn off gas, electricity, and water. If a tornado causes leaks in your natural gas system it can be lethal to the residents of the house and the neighborhood. Shutting these off immediately can prevent fires and explosions. Tornado winds can also cause power lines to break and become very dangerous. Water leaks can also cause damage to your home. Make a note of the location of the main valve for shutoff.
- If a tornado leaves you immobilized, keeping non-perishable food somewhere handy during a tornado allows you to stay healthy while rescuers attempt to get to you. Keep enough food for each person to have three meals a day for three days in your kit. Choose foods with a long shelf life, like granola bars, peanut butter, crackers or prepackaged emergency meals. Keep enough water on hand to allow each person to consume one gallon per day for three days.
