Cleaning Solution for Ceramic Tile Floors

    • 1). Sweep or vacuum the floors every day. Use a vacuum with a bare floor attachment or a regular broom and dustpan. Dirt left on the floor and walked on will scratch the floor and make it more difficult to clean.

    • 2). Fill a bucket with warm tap water and mop the floor once a week. If you have more than just dirt and dust, place a cup of white vinegar in the water and mop with the mixture. Most glazed ceramic tile floors do not need a commercial cleaner to get them clean.

    • 3). Dilute a nonabrasive household cleaner in a bucket of warm water according to the directions on the cleaner. Mop unglazed floors once a week with the solution. Dirt and spills tend to stick to the unglazed tiles more frequently than the glazed tiles.

    • 4). Scrub stuck-on dirt lightly with a soft scrub brush for spot cleaning. Clean up spills and other debris as soon as you notice them, so you won't need to use a scrub brush often; it can eventually wear the tile.

    • 5). Rinse the floor each time you mop it with clean, fresh water. This will help to pick up the dirty water so it does not just get moved around the floor.

    • 6). Dry the floor with soft, clean rags as soon as you are done mopping. This will also help remove the last of the dirty water and keep the floor from getting water spots as it dries.

    • 7). Mix a 50/50 solution of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide and water and clean stubborn stains and dirt from the grout with a toothbrush. Dry these areas immediately after cleaning, or the porous grout will reabsorb the dirty water. Seal the grout with grout sealer every two years for the best protection.
