  Rattle can paint provides a cost-effective method to finish virtually any surface. It's also readily available at home improvement and department stores. Different types of paint dispensed from rattle cans are made for specific surfaces and textured finishes. The keys to successful painting from a rattle can are in the preparation, application method and long-term surface care.
  
  

Preparation

• Your painting location is an important consideration. Work outside or in a well-ventilated area. If the item you are painting cannot be moved outdoors, open all windows and doorways and extinguish pilot lights. A fan will help circulate the air.
  
  Rattle can paint produces a large amount of overspray. Tape over any part of the object you don't want painted. Protect other surfaces in the area with drop cloths.
  
  Prepare the surface by sanding any rough areas and removing any old, loose paint or debris. Wash dirty surfaces with mild detergent or mineral spirits. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly before applying paint.
  
  

Rattle Can Painting

• Read and follow all label instructions and warnings on the rattle can paint. Shake the can well, generally for two full minutes prior to application. Applying a primer prior to painting will generally help provide a longer lasting finish. Select a primer recommended by the manufacturer of the rattle can paint. Pay special attention to the recommended time for drying between primer and paint application.

Care of Painted Surfaces

• Allow the paint to dry thoroughly before attempting to move or use your object. Overnight drying is ideal. Applying a clear top coat will help extend the life of the finish. This is especially important for outdoor objects exposed to moisture and extreme temperatures. Reapply the top coat periodically to maintain the finish.
