On the Red Carpet: 2012 MTV Video Music Awards
The MTV VMAs' annual shindig where anything goes once again hit the L.A. Staples Centre for a night of fun, frolicking and, fearless fashion. Did anyone cross-dress or come bearing reptiles? Were there any big surprises to behold? Flip through to find out who wore what. . .
Zoe Saldana
Zoe Saldana has become a bit of a style plate as of late, easily traversing between Hollywood and New York’s high fashion world. For the Video Music Awards, Saldana managed to make pale pink look (somewhat) exciting. And though we might expect something a little bolder for this all-out music industry event, Zoe looked both sexy (lace-up Ferragamo stilettos anyone?) and pretty.
Nicki Minaj
Oh, Nicki Minaj. Like Lady Gaga in kind, you will never fail to step up to the plate when it comes to making it rain (sartorially, that is). At the MTV Awards, you did it again in a skin-tight black bejeweled jumpsuit, replete with red rhinestone corsetry, just in case we missed anything. A bang-up job, if I may say so myself. Although I might be partial to a crazier hair ‘do rather than that afterthought hat that looks like it was stolen from the cop from The Village People.
Ke$ha
While she didn’t wear trash at the MTV Video Awards, Ke$ha didn’t exactly make it to high class. In a dress that was just a tad too short, along with a feather-embellished evening bag and a brand new bleach blonde coif, the pop star gave her red carpet appearance a glamorous effort. Her appliquéd dress really was a refreshing change from her usual dirty-casual look, but still manages to make her look mostly naked.
Katy Perry
Forgoing her usual candy-colored performance confections, Katy Perry opted for a sheer and embellished Elie Saab gown worthy of any red carpet. Equal parts feminine and fun, with a leather bodice and turquoise beading, Katy channeled the image of a true superstar, as she should.
Emma Watson
Points to Emma Watson for donning this print-tastic look by Peter Pilotto, yet with her simple hair and seemingly make-up free face, the ensemble falls flat and ends up making her appear more like the child actor who so famously played Harry Potter’s best friend and not the full-fledged star she has since become. The bright colors and otherwise simple look make her look, quite frankly, like a kid.
Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato gave some serious edge at the Video Awards and pulled it off flawlessly. In a glittery mini dress and cropped leather moto jacket, all in black, she could have pulled up to the red carpet on a Harley. Her blonde locks and red lips completed the devil-may-care look.
Alicia Keys
That high-slit, leg-out trend that Angelina Jolie kicked off at the Academy Awards is just not going away. In this edition, Alicia Keys went full Tin Man in a metallic single-sleeve gown, that, what with some awkward wrinkles, looked like it simply doesn’t fit. While the silver dress was a bit of a mess, Alicia’s beauty look was golden: her clean makeup and freshly chopped hair kept this outing from being a total miss.
Pink
This wasn’t Pink’s first time on the MTV red carpet, and her glam dress combined with her funky ‘do separated her from the rest, leaving the junior pop tarts in her wake. The singer looked both sophisticated and cool in chandelier earrings and a crystal-encrusted, body-con dress that revealed just enough.
Taylor Swift
Looking white hot, Rihanna was a winner in more ways than one at the MTV Video Awards. While she took home multiple Moonmen, she also shone on the red carpet in a modern and minimalist white gown that had jaws on the ground. The singer also debuted a pixie cut that was anything but cute. On her, this look is straight glamour and sex appeal.
In a 180 from her usual jewel and lace-embellished gowns, Taylor Swift went for a super sleek and chic white suit, signaling to the millions watching that she has grown up. Gone is the innocent princess. Here’s hoping this powerful-looking persona is here to stay.
