Simple Do-It-Yourself Stump Pulling

    Remove Small Stumps

    • 1). Use the shovel to dig around the stump to expose as much of the root system as possible.

Use the root saw to cut through the roots.

    • 2). Pull out the cut roots that are not connected to the stump and dispose of them on the compost heap.

    • 3). Push the hoe under the stump and use it to lever the stump free from the soil.

Move around the stump as you lift it. When the stump is completely free, you can pull it out.

    Remove Large Stumps

    • 1). Cut the stump down as close to the ground as you can with a chainsaw.

Dig around the stump to expose as many of the roots as possible. Use the root saw to cut the roots.

    • 2). Use the hoe to lift a root up as far as possible. Secure the chain under the root and around the stump. Attach it to your truck or tractor and pull.

    • 3). Pull the stump from different angles. At first it will not budge, but eventually it will begin to pull free from the soil.
