  Laminate has come a long way since it was invented in 1909. Laminate started off as simple layers of paper and resin in plain patterns. Newer laminate reproduces the look of stone, wood, tile and other surfaces. The inexpensive stain resistant surface makes laminate a popular material to cover countertops. But laminate surfaces scratch easily, and will not tolerate any heat. As laminate ages, heat and scratch damages will take a toll on the surface, making an unattractive bacteria harboring counter. Rejuvenate a damaged or dull laminate countertop by covering it with a new surface.
  
  

Cover with Paint

• Painting a laminate countertop will give the counter a whole new look. Different painting techniques transform the laminate into a marble, granite or stone countertop. Use a wood filler product to fill in and hide any scratches or chips. Sanding and applying a good quality primer is also essential before painting. Test the pattern or effect desired on a board or other surface to practice the desired look. For a quality finished product, alkyd, a synthetic resin in paint, will give the surface a quality finished look and a hard, water resistant finish.
  
  

Stick-on Tiles

• To cover the countertop with a new surface, vinyl stick-on tiles for floors will also work on countertops. Vinyl tiles come in a varied range of textures, patterns and colors. The peel-off and sticky back makes applying very easy. Preparing the laminate properly will help the vinyl stick to the surface. Careful planning and cutting of the tile before removing the sticky back will also help minimize waste and time. After placing the tile, a vinyl seam-sealing kit will keep bacteria and moister from entering the cracks. While it may not be the most long-lasting solution, it is an easy covering method.
  
  

Ceremic Tiles

• For a durable and long lasting counter makeover, use ceramic tiles over a laminate countertop. Its burn resistant and easy to clean surface makes ceramic tiles a preferred surface for a countertop. Proper sealing of the tile grout after installing will ensure water resistance and easy cleaning. Unsealed grout will stain permanently. Ceramic tiles will break if a heavy object falls or hits down on the counter hard. Tiles will repair easily with a filler or by replacing with a new tile. Tile also adds value to a house, making it worth the extra effort for some home owners to install.
