How to Renew Guardianship

    • 1). Review all court documents. You should receive paperwork from the court before the year anniversary of when you were appointed guardian. If you do not, call the court clerk at the probate court in the county where your ward lives.

    • 2). Record all necessary information so that you can report to the court. You should keep track of the dates you visited your ward. You will need the contact information of the physician who treats your ward and any information on other social services that he uses, such as a mental health clinic.

    • 3). Complete all paperwork from the court. Guardians in most states are required to fill out annual reviews or reports. These reports usually ask about any changes in your ward's health, living situation or financial situation. Include as much detail as possible.

    • 4). Mail or drop off the completed annual review to the court. Make a copy for your records, and ask the court to mail back a copy to you so that you confirm the document was filed. Also, provide copies of the annual report to your ward, his family and any other individuals involved in his care.

    • 5). Wait to hear back from the court. In most cases, the court will have no objections with your guardianship and it will be automatically renewed. However, if the court has any concerns, you will be required to fill out additional paperwork or attend a hearing.
