Zippered Coin Purse Tutorial
- 1). Measure and cut the fat quarter to 5 1/2-by-12 inches.
- 2). Fold the 5 1/2-inch edges of the fabric half an inch toward the wrong side of the fabric. Iron the folds.
- 3). Line one of the folded edges of the fabric so it is parallel with the teeth of the zipper a 1/4 inch from the teeth with the right side of the fabric and the right side of the zipper are both facing up. Use straight pins to hold the fabric in place along the zipper tape.
- 4). Replace the presser foot on your sewing machine with a zipper foot. Press the small lever behind the foot of the machine to release the presser foot. Continue to hold the lever while you place the zipper foot on the machine. Release the level so the machine grips the foot.
- 5). Sew down the side of the zipper's teeth to attach the fabric to the zipper tape. Remove the straight pins as you sew. Repeat this process with the other folded edge of the fabric on the other side of the zipper.
- 6). Turn the fabric and zipper construction inside out so the wrong side of the fabric and zipper are facing out. Rotate the construction so the zipper is one inch down from the top edge of the fabric when you flatten the piece. Iron the top and bottom edges of the fabric once the zipper is in place.
- 7). Replace the presser foot on your machine.
- 8). Open the zipper half way. Sew down both sides of the coin purse with a 3/4-inch seam allowance. Trim the seam allowance down to a 1/4 inch.
- 9). Open the zipper the rest of the way and turn the coin purse right side out through the open zipper. Press the left and right seams of the coin purse to flatten the seams.
