How to Finish Cedar Siding
- 1). Use the paintbrush and work the water-repellent preservative into all lap joints and corners of the wood siding. The more preservative you apply to the wood surface, the greater the depth of penetration of the sealer into the wood.
- 2). Apply the water-repellent preservative to large, flat areas of the siding with the roller applicator. This will reduce the application time.
- 3). Allow the water repellent-preservative to fully cure. Follow the manufacturer's drying and cure times before applying stain or paint. Failure to do so may cause stains to show through the stain or paint.
- 4). Apply the paint or stain to the cedar siding per the manufacturer's directions. The composition of your chosen stain or paint will affect application rates and methods, as well as drying times. Some strains may only be applied with a sprayer, as discoloration may occur due to accidental second coating of the cedar siding. In other words, brushing on a stain could result in overlap, creating a darker tone once the stain is fully cured.
