How to Use Winter Pool Covers
Winter pool covers are different from the pool covers that you may use during the summer. Winter covers are especially designed to insulate the pool water. Due to this reason, the cover sits directly on the surface of the water, instead of being secured with stakes or anchors. This fixture gives the winter pool covers an edge over their traditional alternates. However, before using the cover, you need to ensure that the water line is underneath the skimmer line. Furthermore, before covering the pool, you may need to winterize the pool water.
Following are some useful guidelines that will help you to effectively use winter pool covers.
1. Extract few inches of water from your pool with the help of liquid vacuum or rented pump. This is done to ensure that no water remains inside the skimmer tube that can freeze in winter, and thus wrap, expand or break them. However, there is no need for draining the entire pool.
2. Add winterizing solution and algaecide. You can easily find them at a prominent online pool gear store. The best way is to purchase pre-measured bottles individually or placed together in kits.
3. Unroll the pool cover and place it on the top of the pool. Make sure that itâEUR(TM)s touching the water and the cover is placed in the center, with the same amount of overlap on all sides. You can use a tape or yard stick for measurement. This is vital to ensure that the edges of the cover do not float in the pool or get folded due to excessive slack.
4. For above ground pool, make the use of a cable that can be moved through the holes around the outer portion of the cover. You need to thread it through each hole and then pull tightly to secure it. If the covers are not pulled properly, it may sink when debris, snow or leaves fall on the top of it.
5. If you have in-ground pool, you need to weigh down the cover with more water through tying jugs or bags to loops on its bottom. While filling it with hose, leave some space for water to expand if it freezes. Filing 75 percent of the vessel is appropriate.
6. Inspect your winter pool cover one last time to ensure that there are no gaps where debris or leaves can seep underneath. If everything is perfect, your pool is secure during winter.
Hopefully, the aforementioned guidelines will prove to be of great help in letting you get the most out of your winter pool cover.
