Party Ideas for One-Year-Olds

    Theme

    • Being that the child is only a year old, he's not going to understand complex themes like pirates or princesses. However, he can recognize his favorite toy. You can create a theme for the party based on his rubber duck, stuffed barnyard animals or toy cars and trucks. Decorate your home in the same colors as the toy. For example, if he has a blue and yellow rubber duck, find party plates with ducks on them, blue and yellow party hats and blue and yellow streamers.

    Games

    • You are likely going to invite other small children and their parents to the party. Baby bottle bowling is a game that parents can play with their children. Set up baby bottles, give the children a small ball and let them try to knock over the baby bottles. Baby relay race is another game parents can play with their children. They can race one another on their little hands and knees to get their hands on a particular stuffed animal or toy car.

    Decorations

    • If you have chosen a theme, your decorations will consist of the same colors as the theme. Set up different play areas in a specific room or a controlled area in your back yard. Create a baby-friendly environment with stuffed animals and building blocks. A way to maintain order amongst a bunch of children hyper on birthday cake and ice cream is to set up a coloring area to keep their little hands occupied. Finger paints are fun for children. You can even buy edible finger paints just in case the kids like putting their hands in their mouths.

    Food

    • Your first step in deciding on the menu for the party is to consult with the other parents. Children enjoy sweet treats, but some parents don't want their children consuming too much sugar. If you can find sugarless treats, your party will be a hit with both children and parents. Plus, you want to protect the children from food allergies. Children like to play with their food, so finger foods will be fun for them.
