Also, the rug should be wide enough that when a person leaves the bed their feet hit the rug.
Living Room:
The area rug should be large enough to place the feet of the furniture on the outer perimeters of the rug. This creates an illusion for the homeowner that the rug extends indefinitely.
It is not meant to sit only under coffee tables or be a floor mat for when getting out of bed. Using a rug that is too small with make the room will feel smaller instead of larger and it will not define the space.
Bathroom:
