A Bus Tour to Nafplion

The coming fall is a great time to make a bus tour to the capital of Greece. Not the current capital, full of people and cars, but the aristocratic, calm, noteworthy and charming Nafplion – the old capital of Greece.

The fantastic Nafplion is located about 170 km south of Athens and about 60 km from Corinth, where the Corinth Canal breaks the southern Balkan Peninsula and turns it into Peloponnese Island.

Your bus tour will not take much time of travelling. Some people say that Peloponnese looks like a maple leaf; others say it looks like a hand with outstretched fingers. Nafplion is located between the thumb and the forefinger; it is the pearl of the Argolid Valley and the bay. Greeks themselves considered it the most beautiful city in Peloponnese.

It will be nice during your bus travel to decline to Corinth to see the bridge of the Corinth Canal. The ancient Corinth (located about 8 km from the new city) is a center of the maritime trade from north to south and from west to east. Corinth and Argos were the main forces in the region after the decline of Mycenae. The ancient Corinth was destroyed by strong earthquakes. The same thing happened also to the new town many times.

After the exit to the ancient Nemea, the road narrows, but you will be amazed by the spectacular scenery - endless orange and lemon trees. Then, during your bus tour, you will reach Mycenae - the “sister” of Crete, where Schliemann discovered the burial golden mask of Agamemnon, the apex of Greek civilization form 16-15 to 12 century B.C. Soon the bus will reach Nafplion. The first impression of the city is the greenery and the first word that comes to your mind that can describe the city is elegance. There are wonderful cacti, aloe, pine, large wild poppies and many more. The fortress Palamidi is situated high above the old town, and if you want to reach it you will need more physical qualities and efforts. There is also a lift for the lazy people. It is quite possible, however, to reach a certain level by foot, high enough to see the panorama of the city. The view is very picturesque. Then you can continue on the asphalted road from the entrance of Palamidi and get to the imminent huge rock, where a fortress is located. Soon you will reach the big stairs which lead to the Catholic Church. It is famous with its wooden arch, on which are carved names - the name of Byron is one of them. The churches in Nafplion are remarkably diverse in their architecture. In these wonderful buildings you will see Venetian arcades, bell towers, Byzantine performances, snow-white marble columns in Doric style and many more.
