How to Convert kWh to GJ

    • 1). Enter the numerical value of energy, in units of kWh, into the calculator. For example, if your value was 200 kWh, you would enter 200.

    • 2). Divide the value you just entered by 278. This is the conversion factor between units of kWh and gJ. This factor comes about since a kWh is 1,000 J per second times 3600 seconds in an hour, which is 3,600,000 J or 0.0036 gJ. Since one kWh is 0.0036 gJ, one gJ is 1/0.0036 or 278 kWh.

    • 3). Report your value of energy as the result of the calculation and in units of gJ. In the case of the example, you would calculate 200 divided by 278 and report the energy value as 0.719 gJ.
