How to Get a Birth Certificate From the State of South Carolina

    • 1). Complete the application form. This form can be picked up at any of the county offices in the state of South Carolina or by downloading from the link provided in the Resources section. Some of the information you are required to fill out on the application is your applicant mailing information, why you are requesting the certificate and who the certificate is for (as well as the birth date).

    • 2). Take the application, your photo ID and $12 (nonrefundable standard searching fee) to either the state office (2600 Bull St., Columbia, SC 29201) or to one of the county offices. A list of offices is available in the Resources section.

    • 3). Give your information and check to the clerk at the office. You will be asked to show your photo ID. It will take about 45 minutes for your application to be processed, in which time you can leave if you would like and come back later in the day.
