How to Register to Vote in Person in Los Angeles
- 1). Determine your eligibility to vote. You must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of California. You must also be at least 18 years old on the date of the next election. The deadline for registration is 15 days before the next local or statewide election.
- 2). Select the most convenient county office for you to visit. In addition to the department headquarters in Norwalk, the Registrar-Recorder's office maintains six other offices throughout the County of Los Angeles. Three of these are within the city of Los Angeles, including the East Los Angeles office, the Florence/Firestone office and the LAX Courthouse near Los Angeles International Airport. These offices are generally open from early morning through late afternoon, so you may want to choose one near your work or school. Check the Los Angeles County website for current hours.
- 3). Complete the voter registration form. These forms are available at most Los Angeles County buildings, as well as city halls, fire stations, libraries and post offices within the county. Forms can also be obtained at the California Department of Motor Vehicles and at public assistance offices. You may also call the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's office to request a form by mail or download one directly from the California Secretary of State's website. You can also fill out the form after you arrive at the office.
- 4). Turn in the completed form to the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's office. You do not need to provide identification when you register if you provide a driver's license or state identification card number in the appropriate space on the form. If the state cannot verify that the provided number is your license or identification number, you will be asked for identification when you vote.
- 5). Use the Voter Registration Verification feature on the Registrar-Recorder's website to check on your registration status.
