Job Description and Work Environment

• Computer network administrators oversee the implementation of all facets of computer networks for their employers. This can include both Internet and intranet systems as well as both wide and local area networks. Network administrators can work for large or small companies, colleges and universities and government agencies. They oversee the maintenance of both hardware and software components. Network administrators typically work in office environments and are typically have 40-hour workweeks, although on-call administrators may have to work additional hours from time to time.
  
  

Qualifications

• Network administrators typically need a bachelor's degree in a computer-related field like computer science or information technology, although degrees in other fields will suffice so long as the applicant has sufficient computer experience and technical knowledge. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, some network administrator positions can be obtained with an associate degree or a certificate of completion. Regardless of the degree, network administrators need a strong aptitude in math and computer applications.
  
  

Software Knowledge

• A strong knowledge of various types of software is needed to work as a network administrator. Network administrators need to be familiar with administration software such as Cisco Systems CiscoWorks, SolarWinds software and Hewlett-Packard HP Network Node Manager. They also need to be able to use network monitoring software like VERITAS NerveCenter, ZABBIX and Dartware InterMapper. Other types of software utilized by network administrators include virus protection software and transaction security software as well as configuration management and network security management software.
  
  

Other Requirements

• Analytical and problem-solving skills are essential to the network administrator, along with interpersonal communication skills. Network administrators must be able to understand problems and offer solutions, possibly without overseeing the problem first hand. They need to be able to work as part of team and manage and direct teams as necessary. Attention to detail and the ability to multitask are also essential for network administrators.
