How to Increase the Height of a Drawer's Sides & Back
- 1). Pull the nails out of the drawer's front face with the nippers. Be careful not to damage the front face, as it needs to be reattached to the drawer frame. Separate the front face from the drawer frame itself and place it aside for now.
- 2). Use the nippers to remove all nails holding the side and end panels in place on the drawer frame. Remove the side panels and the end panel so you only have the bottom panel left.
- 3). Use the measuring tape to determine how much taller you want the sides to be. Use the existing drawer sides as your guide when adding height. Write the total drawer sides' height down on a piece of paper.
- 4). Lay the plywood sheet on the floor. Place the original drawer sides on the plywood. Use the pencil to trace the bottom of the panel and the two sides. Remove the side panel from the plywood and add the additional height from the previous step to the sketch. Repeat this step with the opposite side panel and the end panel.
- 5). Cut the new higher side and end panels with the table saw. Remove splinters and cracks with medium-grit sandpaper. Hammer the edge panel to the bottom panel with nails. Line the side panels up to the bottom panel, creating a drawer frame. Attach the side panels using nails and a hammer.
- 6). Line the front panel up to the drawer frame and reattach it using nails and the hammer.
