Uses for Pie Crusts
- One of the most often-used applications for pie crust is quiche. Quiche is best served for breakfast or brunch and is very simple to prepare. A quiche normally consists of eggs, half and half, cheese and any other fillings you desire. One of the most-known quiche recipes is called a "quiche lorraine" and contains sauteed onions, bacon, Gruyere cheese, nutmeg and salt and pepper. Use your imagination to mix your favorite ingredients and make a quiche just for you.
- Savory pot pies are another popular use for pie crust. A pot pie has a crust on the bottom, filling and a crust on the top. Both chicken and turkey are usually used as filling in a pot pie. A chicken pot pie contains chicken, carrots, peas, onions, milk, salt, pepper, cream of chicken soup, poultry seasoning and flour for thickening.
- Many variations of tartlets can be made, based on why you need them. Tartlets are small cups made out of the pie crust, then filled with whatever filling you desire. These are excellent for parties, and can easily be eaten with you fingers in one bite. Both savory and dessert tartlets can be made. Some savory tartlets include spinach with artichoke and broccoli, and cheese and potato. Sweet tartlets can be filled with fruit or custart pie filling.
- Pie crust is delicious on its own, simply brushed with a little melted butter and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. Cut the pie crust into decorative shapes or twist them into sticks. Cinnamon sugar pie crusts can be used as a garnish on other desserts or eaten on their own.
