Why Your Air Conditioner Is Blowing Hot AIr

Is your central air conditioner (or window unit AC) blowing out warm air? Are you only getting hot air? Does the AC only work sometimes but leaves your home hot the rest of the time? There are a few causes of these problems: 1.
Bad Duct Work
If your ducts are not functioning properly, you will not get cold, refreshing air from your Central AC.
You also will have problems heating your home in the winter.
The ducts are extremely important to your home's HVAC system.
The most common problem is that the ducts are dirty.
All of the air that circulates through your home goes, at some point, through your basement, attic, crawl space or comes in from outside.
This can lead to a build up of dust, dirt and other debris.
The vents can also be broken, bent, or not installed correctly.
Even a small crack, hole or separation between the vents can leak out a tremendous amount of air.
They should be cleaned a few times a year by an HVAC specialists.
2.
Broken Thermostat
When your air conditioning is on but you are only getting warm, hot or semi-cool air, it is a sign that your AC's thermostat is broken.
The thermostat is responsible for controlling the temperature of the air.
When it is malfunctioning, the machine simply can not cool the air to the proper temperature.
This is a fix best left to a heating and cooling pro.
Thermostats are important and installing them is complicated.
Luckily, this is a fairly low cost fix and will have your home cool and comfortable again in no time.
3.
Not Enough Refrigerant
In the old days, you might hear people say that their AC needed "a shot of freon.
" Freon was a type of refrigerant that is no longer used, but the same problem happens with the new, energy efficient, eco friendly coolants.
Basically, the more you run the unit, the more gets used.
At some point, you will run out.
It can also freeze if it gets combined with moisture (outside units have this problem quite often).
4.
Your Condenser Coils Don't Work
The condenser coils actually cool the air in your AC.
They work in tandem with the thermostat to keep the air cold.
When these coils break, there is no way to cool the air down and it will blow out warm air.
These coils can freeze easily so it is a good idea to have them serviced by a pro a few times a year.
