What Can a Writer Write About?
There was this TV program that really struck me with its revelations.
A hypnotist got some people to read a specially-prepared purportedly psychic reading consisting of several pages.
Each person was to read theirs and comment on its accuracy.
They were not to share their reading with the other participants.
The participants were shocked at the accuracy, with many oohs and ahhs! And then the hypnotist asked the participants to exchange their reports.
He asked one person to read out loud from the report in her hand.
The participants started looking strangely at each other, then one said that there was a mistake, because it was her report being read.
But then someone else said the same.
And another...
What was going on?! Well, all the purportedly psychic reports were identical.
They were based on clever psychology, combining the hopes and dreams of the vast majority of people.
That is why each participant felt they were reading about themselves.
They were reading about their hopes and dreams! And what I remember to this day is that it said that the person would love to be a writer one day, and that there was a book inside of them waiting to be written.
So we are all writers at heart! I remember my first professional writing assignment.
It was quite accidental.
I was getting hot under the collar reading an article on a social website.
The article presented one very narrow point of view only, and so I wrote a passionate email to the editor saying why I disagreed and just what irked me about what I felt was unfair stereotyping.
To my surprise, the editor emailed me back with a challenge to write about my point of view and asking what my fee would be to do so.
Oh my goodness, all of a sudden, I had to think of what to charge! So I put my thoughts in an article, asked some writer friends what I should charge, and hey presto, I literally became a professional writer when the cheque arrived in the post! That was not a very well-written article, but hey, it was written from the heart.
Now that I understand the Law of Attraction and spirituality, I realise that I got paid to do what I wanted because I was so passionate about it.
Now I write self-help e-books that I am passionate about.
I have a small niche market of clients that I absolutely love the interaction with, and I write only about subjects that I know and am passionate about.
It is a real pleasure.
If you feel that there is a writer in you but are unsure where to start, my advice is to start with what you are passionate about.
Write about what you want to shout from the rooftops to the world.
And then everything else will follow.
