DIY: Refinishing a Fiberglass Tub

    • 1). Clean the bathtub to enhance adhesion. Scrub the tub with a trisodium phosphate cleanser. Rinse the tub and wait one to three hours for it to dry.

    • 2). Scour the surface with sandpaper until it feels slightly gritty. This prepares the fiberglass to accept paint.

    • 3). Protect areas of the bathtub you don't want painted with painter's tape. Protect the floor next to the tub with a dropcloth.

    • 4). Apply a base coat of acrylic spray primer to the abraded bathtub. Hold the can 8 inches from the tub as you apply. Wait three hours for the primed tub to dry.

    • 5). Apply an appliance spray epoxy to the primed fiberglass bathtub. Hold the can 8 inches from the tub as you apply. Wait 24 hours before filling the tub with water.
