We know that auto thefts are a problem in the greater Phoenix area. Over the years we have, at times, been the worst state in the nation for auto thefts, and usually we're one of the 5 worst states. Our proximity to Mexico most certainly has something to do with it. You could be shopping at the mall, and by the time you are done buying that perfect pair of jeans and stopping for a food court snack, your car can be across the border.

In May 2007 a local TV channel, KTVK-TV Channel 3, pored over some records provided by the Glendale, Phoenix, and Tempe police departments regarding reported auto thefts. They compiled a list of the ten spots in those three cities that have the highest reports of auto thefts. Five of the top ten spots for auto theft were (not a surprise) malls. The other five locations were industrial complexes or apartment complexes. In the following listing, number 1 had the highest number of reported thefts, 2 was the second highest number, and so on.
