Maryland Boarding Schools
- The Garrison Forest School is an all-girl boarding school for 8th through 12th grade located in Owings Mills. The school offers day school options as early as preschool; however, boarding is only possible starting from 8th grade. In addition to academics, the school offers plenty of extracurricular activities. Students can join clubs based on their interests, including a book club, astronomy club, politics club and cooking club. Nightly activities are offered, including movies and games. Weekends are also filled with activities, such as trips, concerts and sporting events.
- Catering to boys in grades 9 through 12, Georgetown Preparatory School is located in Bethesda. It is an independent Jesuit school that was created to prepare high school boys for college. However, boys of all backgrounds are accepted. Students are required to take six courses each year and will graduate with all of the courses that are required for acceptance to colleges. Students are encouraged to participate in sports and clubs after school hours. A mandatory study hall takes place each weeknight from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. to ensure all school work is completed. Weekends allow students to return home or participate in activities offered by the school, such as trips.
- Located in Glencoe, Oldfields School is an all-girls school for grades 8 through 12. Day students are also welcome at the school. The school is the oldest all-girls boarding school in the country. Academics include all of the courses necessary for a girl to move on to college life. Boarding students enjoy interschool dances, karaoke and trips into one of the nearby cities for museums, fairs and amusement parks. Students can also go home on weekends with friends in the day program.
- Saint James School is a co-ed boarding school in St. James for children in grades 8 through 12. Some students are day students, but the majority of them are boarders. Students complete courses that will lead them toward their goals in life and prepare them for admission into college. Students are required to set aside time to study each night. A study hall runs from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. each weeknight. A returning student will be paired up with each new student to help out with the transition. Events are planned for each weekend, including theater and concerts in the city, outdoor activities and movies.
- St Timothy's School is an all-girls boarding school located in Stevenson. Day students are also a part of the campus. The school exists to teach girls in grades 9 through 12 the basics of daily living and the academics required for the college years. Students are given plenty of flexibility in their coursework to create a personalized course plan. Clubs for various interests are available for the girls, including singing groups, environmental club and yearbook staff. Weekend field trips include visiting the sites in Washington D.C., going shopping and seeing movies.
- Offering co-ed students a high school education, West Nottingham Academy was founded in Colora in 1744. A majority of the students at the school board. Students are required to complete 15 credits before they can move on to the next grade level. Depending on the student's academic standing, several tracks are available: the standard track, English as a second language track and the advanced track. Students are also required to acquire one credit in athletics each year. Weekends are filled with trips to nearby Philadelphia and Baltimore to enjoy movies, concerts, art galleries and shopping.
