How to Make a Macrame Room Divider
- 1). Cut cords into 12 cords that are 17 yards long, 12 cords 9 yards long, 12 cords 7 yards long, 12 cords that are 5 yards long, and 6 cords that are 4 yards long. If you need your divider to be wider, then you will add more of the 4-yard cords in 6 cord increments. Six cords makes one 6 inch panel, so if you need an additional 30 inches in width, you'll want an additional 5 panels, or 30 cords. Dip all of the ends into wax or glue and allow them to dry completely before continuing. This will prevent them from fraying.
- 2). Use the Larks Head Knot to attach all of the cords to the rod in the following order: six 17 yard cords, six 9 yard cords, six 7 yard cords, six 5 yard cords, six 4 yard cords (or more if needed for a wider divider), six 5 yard cords, six 7 yard cords, six 9 yard cords, six 17 yard cords. Use the Alternating Square Knot to tie 5 rows using 2 working cords and 2 fillers per knot. The rows should be close together.
- 3). Divide the cords into groups of 12. Number each grouping of cords one through twelve in your head from left to right.
- 4). In the first group on the left, tie square knots using cords 3 to 6 and 7 to 10. Use square knots to make a second row with cords 1 to 4 and 9 to 12.
- 5). Slip a bead on cords 6 and 7, if desired. Tie a square knot in cords 5 to 8 if not using beads. Then repeat step 4. Tie square knots in cords 3 to 10 with 2 working cords and 6 fillers.
- 6). Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the panel measures about 78 inches from the rod. Tie two square knots using cords 1 to 4 and 9 to 12. Then tie one more using cords 5 to 8.
- 7). Repeat steps 4 to 6 for panels 3, 5, 7 and 9. Panel 9 will be about 78 inches from the rod, same as panel 1. Panels 3 and 7 will be about 30 inches from the rod. Panel 5 will be about 15 inches from the rod.
- 8). For panels 2, 4, 6 and 8, tie 2 square knots with cords 3 to 6 and 7 to 10. Tie a second row of square knots 1 to 4 and 9 to 12.Tie a square knot with cords 3 to 10 with 2 working cords and 6 fillers. Tie 2 square knots with cords 3 to 6 and 7 to 10. Tie a second row of square knots 1 to 4 and 9 to 12. Slip a bead onto cords 6 and 7 if desired. If not, tie a square knot with cords 5 to 8.
- 9). Trim all of the cords to make them even. If beads are desired, add one followed by an overhand knot along the remaining length. Tie an overhand knot at the end, followed by a barrel knot. If beads are not desired, dip the ends in glue or wax and wait for it to dry.
