Homemade Compost Bin for a Kitchen
- 1). Place the lid onto the bucket you will be using as a homemade compost bin. A large coffee can works well for this purpose.
- 2). Drill 10 to 20 small holes into the lid of the bucket using your drill. The drill bit you use should be no larger than 1/4 inch.
- 3). Remove the lid from the bucket and dump out any shavings that might have fallen into it.
- 4). Place the charcoal filter over the bucket's lid and cut to fit with sharp scissors. The fit does not have to be perfect; it must simply cover the holes you previously drilled. If one filter does not cover the width of your lid, use multiple charcoal filters. According to Nicky Scott, author of "Composting: An Easy Household Guide," pet stores commonly carry charcoal filters to fit in the lid of cat litter boxes.
- 5). Place five to 10 dots of white glue sporadically over the lid to hold the charcoal filter in place.
- 6). Press the charcoal filter onto the lid and allow to dry for a minimum of two hours.
- 7). Replace the charcoal filters every three to five months to keep bad odors from forming. Simply peel away the old ones, add new glue and attach fresh charcoal filters to the compost bin.
- 8). Place a 1-inch layer of dry soil into the bottom of the compost bin before adding kitchen scraps such as potato peels, lettuce, eggshells, coffee grounds or fruit peelings. Stir your compost once a week to keep it aerated.
