Horseman's Associations

    North American Horsemen's Association

    • The North American Horsemen's Association was started in 1987 by Linda Liestman. Based in Minnesota, NAHA works towards promoting healthy relationships between horsemen and their animals and creating general interest in equines. They also work to connect horsemen to insurance agencies and promote safe and responsible horse handling practices. As of early 2011, a full annual membership costs $100 and a lifetime membership is $600. Membership applications can be found on the NAHA website.

    United Professional Horsemen's Association

    • The United Professional Horsemen's Association began in 1968. The UPHA, located in Lexington, Kentucky, was started by professional horse trainers with the goal of benefiting and promoting professional horse shows. This association works towards improving horse show facilities, creating classes for young horsemen and sponsors the UPHA National Cup Challenge Scholarship program. Individuals can apply for membership only after they have been professional horse trainers for at least one year.

    Arabian Professional & Amateur Horseman's Association.

    • The Arabian Professional & Amateur Horseman's Association was started in 1986 to increase awareness of the Arabian horse breed. Its goal is to attract more horsemen to own, care for and show Arabian horses. The group sponsors national and recognition award programs that showcase outstanding Arabian horse trainers and showmen. The APHA works for ethical treatment of horses, fair professional horse shows and communication between Arabian horse owners and professional horse associations. An annual individual basic membership costs $55 and an annual basic family membership $100. Additional fees are required for membership with competition cards.

    American Trail Trial-Horsemen's Association

    • This association was founded to encourage the sport of trail trial rides and trail riding on horseback. The American Trail Trial-Horsemen's Association sponsors competitive and non-competitive trail trial rides. These events are trail rides that include obstacles that riders must maneuver their horses through. Association authorities judge horsemen on how safely they complete the course. Awards are given at the end of each year. Annual adult membership costs $30 and annual youth membership is $15.
