How to Paint a Wooden Garage Door

    • 1). Wash the wooden garage door with a pressure washer. Start the washer on its lowest setting as a precaution against unintentional damage. Allow the door to dry completely.

    • 2). Apply painter's tape to any areas of the garage door you do not want coated in paint. Raise the wooden garage door 1 foot. Slide fabric dropcloths beneath the door. Close the garage door.

    • 3). Apply a coat of acrylic latex primer to a 3-foot-wide portion of the wooden door, using a roller. Smooth the wet primer, using a paintbrush manufactured for applying latex paints. Work quickly before the primer begins to dry. Continue until the garage door is completely coated in primer. Raise the door 1 foot. Allow the primer to dry for two hours.

    • 4). Wash the brush with water.

    • 5). Apply a coat of acrylic latex paint to the primed wooden door in the same way you applied the primer. Allow the paint to dry for two hours. Apply an additional coat if you can see the primer showing through.
