Ideas for What to Put Above Kitchen Cabinets (with Pictures)
Baskets
Choose baskets in different shapes, sizes and colors to put on top of your kitchen cabinets. Measure from the top of the cabinet to the ceiling to find out what size baskets will fit in the space. Display some baskets flat and prop others against the wall. For smaller baskets, use an empty, shallow box to raise the basket up a few inches. If the boxes are visible, wrap them in material or gift wrap that coordinates with your kitchen colors. Spread the baskets out evenly over the cabinets, measuring for equal space between each basket.
Greenery
Purchase several large bunches of artificial greenery to adorn the tops of your cabinets. Plants can be a mix of colors, types and sizes but should come a few inches short of the ceiling. Choose greenery large enough to generously fill the center portion of the cabinet space and one smaller arrangement for each end. Display them in shallow baskets or containers that match your kitchen decor. Use cascading foliage on the end of the cabinet if there is no wall obstructing it from cascading over the edge.
Plates & Platters
Large decorative serving plates and platters can fill the space above kitchen cabinets. Round, antique, retro or china dishes are also options for display. Choose several plates that are similar but not identical. Select pieces that fit well on the cabinet and can be seen from different areas of the kitchen, but are not so large that they dominate the space. Display them using plate stands that will help them stand up without falling over.
Display a Collection
The top of the kitchen cabinets is an ideal place for displaying treasured collections, such as teapots, vintage glass or rooster cookie jars. It doesn't matter if your collection consists of the same type of items, such as cookie jars, or if it is a collection of items featuring a specific theme. For instance, a collection of cows can include a cookie jar, tea pot, statues and milk jugs. Choose something that will show off your personality in the kitchen.
