- 1). Mow your lawn to height of 1 inch before applying the compost. Taller grass prevents the compost from settling on the soil surface.
- 2). Rake the lawn thoroughly before composting. Remove the cut grass and any thatch sitting on the soil surface beneath the grass blades.
- 3). Spread the compost over the lawn. Apply a 1/4- to 1/2-inch layer of compost evenly over the entire lawn.
- 4). Rake the compost after application to smooth it over the lawn surface. Raking helps ensure even application of the compost.
- 5). Water the lawn lightly after applying the compost. The water washes the compost down to the soil surface so it doesn't remain on top the grass blades.
