How to Make Woven Herb Baskets
- 1). Buy a wire-framed basket from a garden center.
- 2). Choose fresh herbs that have long stems and foliage that is feathery. Flax, goldenrod, tansy and costmary work well. Use mint to add a refreshing fragrance.
- 3). Gather one or two stems and anchor the ends down into a crack at the base of the basket frame.
- 4). Weave the entire length of stems in a horizontal direction under and over the wire frame. Be sure to press the stems firmly against the base of the basket frame.
- 5). Select one or two more stems after the first bundle of stems has been woven in.
- 6). Lay this bundle across the previously woven row to overlap it by an inch. Begin weaving, using the opposite under-over pattern of the preceding row.
- 7). Add one stem to each bundle as you move an inch up the basket.
- 8). Pause when 3/4 of an inch of the basket remains to be woven.
- 9). Attach a handle by making a semicircle of braided grapevines or herb stems and securing it to the basket with florist wire.
- 10
Continue weaving stems around the basket until you reach the top of the basket. Weave under and over the handle ends. - 11
Secure southernwood using florist wire around the top of the rim to hide the metal edge. - 12
Place the basket upside down and let it dry.
