Introduction and Materials

Typical pack rat that I am, I started collecting old CDs with the idea of making something with them. I think the silver back of the CDs are very pretty, and many have cool designs on the front too. I’ve seen people make very nice Christmas ornaments out of them. But, of course, I decided to make some jewelry. These CD earrings are pretty basic, but I think a lot more could be done with them.

You’ll need the following:

1 CD
Pencil
Ruler Very, very sharp scissors (metal cutters work best)
Files
E6000 glue
Flat earring post and clutch back

1. First, using the ruler and pencil mark out your shape. A triangle is the easiest to cut because it requires only 2 lines to be cut.
2. Now you need to cut across the lines. If your scissors aren’t sharp enough, the CD will crack.

3. You should have a triangle, and you’ll notice the edges are kind of raw looking. Smooth them up a little using the files.

4. Now dab some glue on the back of the flat ear post and attach to the top, back of the triangle.

5. Let it dry about 24 hours before adding the clutch back.
There are endless possibilities here if you have a stash of old CDs but haven't figured out what to do with them yet. I did try to drill a hole in the top of the triangle, but with little luck. I think my drill bit just wasn’t tough enough though. I also tried using a simple hammer and nail to put in a hole - busted! So, that’s when I resorted to making a post earring with glue.

You could also glue stuff - beads, found objects, wire - to the front of the CD pieces after cutting it up.
