Bill Bryson was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1951 and attended Drake University before dropping out in 1973 to backpack around Europe.
In 1975, Bill Bryson moved to Britain where he became a copy editor for The Times of London and later a deputy news editor for The Independent. He returned to live in New Hampshire for a few years but went back to Britain in 2003. He currently lives in Norfolk, England with his wife and four children.
Bill Bryson is best known for his travel writing (A Walk in the Woods, I'm A Stranger Here Myself, and In a Sunburned Country), but has also written two books on the history of the English language - Mother Tongue and Made in America - and in 2004 he won the Aventis Prize for his science book, A Short History of Nearly Everything.
His most recent book is a childhood memoir entitled The Life and Times of The Thunderbolt Kid.
