How to Make Balsa Wood Rose Petals
- 1). Select a block or sheet of balsa wood to make your rose petals. A sheet of balsa wood less than half an inch thick may be the easiest option to quickly sketch a rose petal shape and cut out using a carving knife, or a utility knife.
- 2). Practice sketching rose petals on a sketch pad until you are happy with the outcome, then use a pencil to sketch your rose petal shapes directly onto the balsa wood.
- 3). Follow the pencil outlines to cut out your rose petals, with the knife blade facing away from your body and fingers. Ensure you have no distractions, as wood cutting requires extreme concentration. Check the lighting in the room to make sure you can see your project clearly.
- 4). Add definition and curve to each rose petal by carving out a concave dip in the center of the petal. Repeat on the opposite side of the petal to create a convex shape to the petal, so there is an inward curve on one side and an outward curve on the other of each petal. Carefully carve until you reach desired thickness.
- 5). Sand the edges of each rose petal carefully using a fine grit sandpaper.
