Sewing a Silk Head Scarf

    • 1). Decide if you want to make a square or a rectangular silk head scarf. Silk head scarves can be made in different shapes and sizes, depending on your preference.

    • 2). Use the ruler to measure the fabric and draw a square or rectangle using the tailor’s chalk. Add at least an extra 1/2 inch to each of the four sides for the hem allowance. A standard square silk head scarf has dimensions of 22-by-22 inches, while a standard rectangle scarf is about 22-by-72 inches. For other scarf sizes, refer to the "Resources" link of this article.

    • 3). Cut the fabric according to the shape using a sharp pair of scissors.

    • 4). Lay the fabric on the ironing board. Fold the edges at least 1/2 inch over and then use an electric iron to press the fabric. Fold the edges another 1/2 inch and press again.

    • 5). Stitch the edges to create the hem. If you are using a sewing machine, sew the edges using a straight stitch.
