How to Clean a Smith & Wesson M&P .40

    Cleaning the Pistol

    • 1). Remove the magazine. Strip the weapon by following the manufacturer's instructions, removing the barrel and slide.

    • 2). Spray a cleaning fluid designed for metal inside the barrel, and place to one side to soak.

    • 3). Spray the metal cleaning fluid onto a brush and vigorously clean the inside and outside of the slide of the pistol. Leave aside for the fluid to settle.

    • 4). Clean the brush and spray it with a plastic cleaning fluid. Brush the receiver and plastic parts of the pistol. Wipe down with a rag once finished to remove residues and remaining liquid.

    • 5). Scrub the inside of the barrel 10 times with a pistol cleaning brush. Brush the outside of the barrel with a cleaned brush.

Pull a piece of cloth sprayed with metal cleaning fluid on a pullthrough cord through the barrel to clean any remaining residue. You may also wrap the cloth around the brush and pull through the barrel.

    • 6). Oil the barrel using gun oil on a pullthrough chord. Rub an oiled finger around the outside of the barrel.

    • 7). Place a few drops of oil inside the slide and use a cotton bud to spread it throughout the inside of the slide, taking care to push the oil into the corners and tight spaces.

    • 8). Oil the receiver and the trigger spring with a drop or two of oil. Rub with a cotton bud to ensure coverage. Place four drops of gun grease into the receiver.

    • 9). Reassemble the pistol and wipe it all over with a rag to complete cleaning.
