Family Portrait Dress Ideas

    Favorite Activities

    • Think of a favorite family activity that you all enjoy and dress the part. If you all enjoy skiing, wear your ski outfits and brightest hats to the photo shoot. Wear camouflage outfits if you're all outdoor enthusiasts. Put on amusing aprons and chef hats if you're a family that loves to cook together, or don sunglasses and beach hats if you love the sun and the sand all year around.

    Your Family Roots

    • Celebrate your family origins by dressing in traditional clothing from your family's original country. Many African American families have already followed this tradition by wearing kente cloth and other traditional fabrics in family portraits. Follow along with this example by donning kilts, embroidered silks, kimonos or any other fabric or clothing that is meaningful to your family history.

    History

    • Take a fun family portrait by dressing up as a family from another era. Outfit yourself in renaissance gear if you're a family that goes to the Ren Faire yearly. Try wild west outfits, 1950s bowling shirts or a 1960s hippie look. Make the outfits as authentic as possible to get the most realistic looking time-travel photo of your family.

    Pop Culture

    • Pick a pop culture icon and dress your entire family in that look. Investigate Dragon*Con and Comic*Con for ideas on how to do this. Whether you like Star Trek, Harry Potter, Sid the Science Kid or Wizard of Oz, there is an entire world of outfits you can explore for your whole family. Show some fun and personality with this photo and be as authentic as possible.
