How to Zero a Scope On a Rifle in 4 Steps

    • 1). Take your rifle to a shooting range. Before zeroing the rifle scope, you need to make sure the scope has been tightly mounted on the rifle. Take a prone shooting position and shoot from a solid and stable position. You can put your rifle on top of sand bags or boxes.

    • 2). Shoot a target 25 yards away. You can buy zeroing target sheets from gun shops or you can make your own by drawing on a paper board.

    • 3). Using the rifle scope to aim at the center of the zeroing target sheet and shoot 2-3 rounds. If you did not hit the target, you need to move the crosshair center to the center where you shot (not the center of the zeroing target sheet) by adjusting the windage and elevation knobs. To calculate how much clicks you need for each knob, you need to know the distance from you to the target and also the distance from the target center to where you shot. Since different rifle scopes operate in different ways, you need to read your rifle scope manual for detailed information.

    • 4). After you re-centered the crosshair, change a new zeroing target sheet and shoot another 2-3 rounds. If you hit the target center, you are done, If you don't, repeat steps 3 and step 4 again until you hit the target center.
