Make Your Home a Head Lice Free Zone

You've heard other parents talk about it, but you never thought it would be a problem in your own home. Yet, low and behold, you've got a head lice problem on your hands. These seemingly nasty critters are not as dangerous as you might think, but many do find the problem very embarrassing, especially if you just can't seem to get rid of the parasites completely. It can be difficult for children to make and maintain friendships if they have insects crawling all over their scalps.

The internet can answer every question you have about this human parasite, without you feeling ashamed or embarrassed. It's a problem that many families encounter, but with the right information you can soon have this parasite out of your home once and for all.

Simple Head Lice Facts
  • They cannot transmit diseases from one human being to another.
  • They cannot fly or jump to and from hosts like fleas or mosquitoes. An infestation is spread on direct or indirect contact to move around.
  • They rely on humans for both heat and food. When separated from the host, a louse has a lifespan of just 72 hours.
  • An adult insect is about the size of a sesame seed; however, nits are much smaller.
  • They are extremely common in both boys and girls aged 3 to 12 years old.
  • The average life cycle of an adult insect is around 30 days.
  • In that time, an adult louse can lay a lot of eggs. Eggs are also known as nits. Newly hatched insects are known as nymphs.
  • Nits take 7 – 14 days to hatch, and nymphs take 7 – 14 days to mature into adults.

How to tell if your Child has an Infestation

It's not always easy detecting the first signs of a possible parasitic invasion in your home. Persistently scratching at the scalp is often a parent's first sign of a possible infestation in the home. However, by the time you see the symptoms, you could already have a big problem on your hands.

The best way by far to keep on top of the parasite problem is to check the hair daily with a nit comb. This may seem like a vigorous and arduous routine to keep to, but if you've had a long term problem with an infestation, you'll understand the need for persistence and diligence at all times.

Effective Head Lice Treatments

Look online for more advice on the variety of different preventative or removal products and techniques.

Decide on your preferred products and tactics in advance, and ensure you keep your cupboards stocked up, just in case. That way, if you do detect any parasites in your home, you can act immediately.

Many parents only treat the human host, and forget to take extra care cleaning their home, to prevent further occurrences, outbreaks, and infestations. Treat all bedding to a hot wash, or a 20 minute spin in the tumble dryer. Thoroughly vacuum the home, taking time to also vacuum the mattresses.

Only by treating the host and the household will you finally make your home a parasite free zone once again.
