How to Uninstall a Toilet
- 1). Turn off the water supply valve for the toilet you are removing. These valves are usually mounted on the wall behind the toilet, but they can also be mounted on the floor. Grasp the knob on the end of the supply valve and turn it clockwise to cut off the water supply.
- 2). Remove the lid for the toilet tank. This is typically made out of porcelain and can break easily so be careful when handling it. For a dual-flush toilet, you may need to first unscrew the push button on top of the lid before removing it.
- 3). Flush the toilet repeatedly until all of the water drains out of the tank. Use a towel to wipe out any water remaining in the tank.
- 4). Place an old towel or rag on the floor underneath the tank. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts on the underside of the tank. Use a pair of pliers to loosen the coupling connecting the water supply hose from the supply valve to the tank. Lift the tank up and off the toilet.
- 5). Insert the edge of a flat head screwdriver underneath the caps at the base of the toilet. Unscrew the flange bolts at the base with an adjustable wrench.
- 6). Run a sharp bladed utility knife around the caulk at the base of the toilet.
- 7). Push the toilet bowl base back and forth to work it loose from the wax ring and caulk. Lift the bowl up and off the flange.
