Effective Teaching - Connecting With Your Students
Attention all teachers or those who desire to teach! If you are going to be successful in the classroom, you must connect with your students.
But finding that connection may not be easy.
So, ask yourself these 7.
5 questions; you need to answer each to create that connection.
#1 - Do you provide value? The first question you must answer is whether or not you are adding value to your students.
If you're not sure, then you probably aren't adding value.
The information or example you are presenting must be of value if you are going to make a connection with your students.
#2 - Do you look for things in common? If you look for things in common with your students, you can use these things to create a connection.
It will require that you pay attention to what is going on around you and ask questions but it can pay off big when it comes to making a connection.
#3 - Do you keep your promises? If you make a promise to your class do you keep it? You cannot afford to tell your students that you are going to do something and not do it.
It is better to say nothing than make a promise and not follow through.
Oh by the way, your students will consider anything you say in class a promise.
#4 - Do you create and project your image? The image your students have of you, will come from you.
You must be aware of this and actively create your image.
You must also take care to project that image consistently.
Your image will be projected through your dress, your hair, and your words.
So work to project an image of confidence and success to your students for maximum connection.
#5 - Are you prepared? Do you prepare for your classes on a regular basis? Or do you prepare only during the school year? If you want to make connections with your students you must know more than just the answers in the textbook.
You must be ready to answer questions that they might think of during class.
Being able to answer questions off the cuff will help build a confidence in you, in your students.
In order to do this you must study above and beyond just the regular hours of school.
You need to start a program of reading, studying and attending seminars.
#6 - Do give a first class presentation? When you stand up in front of your students don't lecture or read to them.
Give your students a first class presentation.
It will take time, work and practice to assemble a great presentation butit will be worth it.
#7 - Is your presentation exciting and compelling? Your presentation must be exciting and compelling.
You must have a hook to grab their attention.
You are competing against television, video games and the internet.
If you're dull and boring, you're going to have a hard time keeping their attention and that leads to problems.

5 - Are you being yourself? Be yourself, your students and their parents will recognize your genuineness.
Also, it is easier, more comfortable and more genuine to be yourself.
