Fine art, furniture and decorations from all three of her homes, Fenwick, Turtle Bay and Los Angeles, will all be offered, including an oil on canvas by George Bellows entitled Upper Broadway estimated to sell for $18,000 to $22,000 (this work will be offered in Sotheby's sale of American Paintings on May 19), and a painting by Robert Henri entitled Storm Cloud, Boothbay Harbor (est. $8/12,000), as well as prints by Toulouse-Lautrec, including May Belfort(est.
$20/30,000), and Elles (est. $10/15,000).
The sale also features a portrait of Katharine Hepburn by Cecil Beaton (est. $2/4,000), two busts of Miss Hepburn by award-winning sculptor Robert McKnight (est. $3/5,000 each) and several caricatures by Al Hirschfeld including one of Miss Hepburn and Spencer Tracy (est. $2/3,000), Spencer Tracy in Old Man and the Sea, Miss Hepburn and Nick Nolte in Ultimate Solution of Grace Quigley and Miss Hepburn and Dorothy Loudon in West Side Waltz (est. $1,500/2,500 each).
From the house in Fenwick comes an American brass and oak plant stand (est. $800/1,200) which Cynthia McFadden, a close friend of Miss Hepburn's and an executor of her estate notes, "Kate bought this plant stand about 20 years ago while we were scouring antique shops in North Salem, New York. She always loved the piece and had it constantly filled with her beloved wild flowers or with Casablanca lilies."
The auction will also include important, personal mementos such as a carved wooden swan originally given by Miss Hepburn to Spencer Tracy (est.
$3/5,000) and which hung above Tracy's desk in his home in Los Angeles, and in later years in her Turtle Bay apartment in Manhattan. Other personal pieces of note include a director's chair (est. $1,500/2,000) with "Katharine Hepburn" printed on the back, and her lighted make-up mirror (est. $800/1,200) which traveled with her on many movie sets.
